Silver Diamine Fluoride

In GranD Rapids and Caledonia

A gentle way to stop cavities in their tracks.

Not every cavity needs a drill. For children who are very young, anxious, or not quite ready for traditional treatment, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) offers a safe and effective way to slow or stop tooth decay. At Mitten Kids Dentistry, we use SDF as a conservative, kid-friendly option to protect growing smiles while keeping visits stress-free.

What is silver diamine fluoride?

Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid medication that’s brushed onto a cavity to help stop decay from spreading. The silver works to kill cavity-causing bacteria, while fluoride strengthens the tooth and helps prevent further damage. SDF is commonly used for baby teeth and early cavities and can delay, or sometimes eliminate, the need for more invasive dental treatment.

Why choose silver diamine fluoride for your child?

Stops Cavities from Progressing

SDF is clinically proven to slow or halt tooth decay, helping preserve your child’s tooth structure and oral health.

Quick and Comfortable

The application takes just minutes and doesn’t require numbing, drilling, or shots—making it ideal for young children or kids with dental anxiety.

Helps Avoid More Invasive Treatment

By controlling cavities early, SDF can reduce the need for fillings or sedation and give your child time to grow and mature before more complex care is needed.

The SDF Treatment Process

Tooth Evaluation

Dr. Katie will carefully examine your child’s tooth to determine whether silver diamine fluoride is the most appropriate option. We look at the size, location, and depth of the cavity, as well as your child’s age, comfort level, and overall oral health. This ensures we’re choosing the least invasive treatment that still protects your child’s smile.

Simple Application

Once SDF is recommended, the tooth is gently dried and isolated. A small amount of the silver diamine fluoride solution is then brushed directly onto the area of decay. The process is quick, quiet, and painless—no drilling, numbing, or shots—making it especially helpful for young children or those with dental anxiety.

Monitoring Over Time

After treatment, we continue to monitor the tooth at regular checkups to ensure the cavity remains inactive. In some cases, SDF may be reapplied to maintain protection. As your child grows and their comfort level increases, we’ll also discuss whether additional treatment—such as a filling—is ever needed in the future.
